The Better Way

Traditional Casting vs. 3DPTEK 3D Printed Sand Mold Casting

Why pump and valve manufacturers are switching.

Traditional Pattern-Based Casting

  • Pattern tooling: $5,000-$50,000 per set
  • Lead time: 4-8 weeks for tooling
  • MOQ required to amortize tooling cost
  • Design change = new tooling
  • Separate core boxes for internal features
  • Draft angles constrain design freedom
  • Multi-piece assembly for complex geometries
  • Pattern storage and maintenance costs
  • Pattern wear degrades accuracy

3DPTEK 3D Printed Sand Mold Casting

  • Zero tooling — print directly from CAD
  • 3-5 days to first casting
  • Single piece to serial — no minimums
  • Iterate designs at near-zero cost
  • Complex cores printed as one piece
  • No draft angle restrictions
  • Single-piece casting reduces welding
  • No pattern storage — print on demand
  • Every mold identical — zero drift

FAQ

Questions Our Marine & Pump Customers Ask

  • Most prototypes ship in 5-7 days from CAD approval — including simulation, printing, pouring, and inspection. Complex parts with extensive machining may add 2-3 days. Batch production (10-100 units) typically delivers in 10-20 days.

  • Ni-Al-Bronze (C95800 — standard for propellers/impellers), 316/CF8M stainless, 2205/2507 duplex and super duplex, Monel, Hastelloy. Also aluminum (A356, A357) and gray iron (HT250, HT300) with protective coatings. Full chemistry and mechanical reports included.

  • All three levels: raw (as-cast, cleaned), semi-finished (critical surfaces machined), and fully finished ready for assembly. In-house: 5-axis gantry (3x4m), V8 vertical centers, CNC turning (up to 450mm), wire-cutting EDM. Surface treatments: sandblasting, painting, anti-corrosion coatings.

  • Yes — a core use case. Send the original part or 3D scan. We recreate the CAD model, optimize gating, and produce castings matching or exceeding the original spec. Typical turnaround: 2-3 weeks from receiving the sample. Ideal for obsolete pump/valve components where OEM tooling no longer exists.

  • EN 10204 3.1 material certificate (chemistry + mechanical properties), dimensional inspection report (CMM data), visual inspection report. For pressure-containing parts: X-ray or dye penetrant NDT. Full traceability: raw material heat number, mold batch, pour date, heat treatment cycle, inspector sign-off.

  • One piece. Zero tooling means zero setup cost to amortize. Order a single prototype, verify, then scale. Per-unit cost decreases with volume due to pouring efficiency, but we never require a minimum order.
