Binder Jetting Metal R&D System

3DPTEK-J160R — Benchtop Binder Jetting Metal 3D Printer

The most accessible path to production-grade metal additive manufacturing. Designed for universities, research institutes and corporate R&D labs — the J160R packs industrial binder jetting capability into a benchtop footprint: 160 × 65 × 65 mm build, up to 1200 dpi, ±0.1 mm accuracy and 165 cc/h inkjet speed.

SLM Traces Point by Point. Binder Jetting Prints the Entire Layer at Once.

Both fit on a lab bench. Both print metal. But the underlying technology makes all the difference — for R&D teams who need speed, material flexibility, and a direct path to pilot production.

Benchtop SLM

Laser-Based DMLS

  • Full-density metal parts
  • No post-sintering needed
  • Laser traces every part — slow for batches
  • Support structures required
  • Support removal adds labor & surface marks
Recommended

Benchtop BJ (J160R)

For R&D Labs

  • Inkjet speed — entire layers at once
  • No support structures — dense nesting
  • 400–1200 dpi selectable resolution
  • ±0.1 mm accuracy, 67% green density
  • Parameters transfer to production

Traditional Lab Methods

Casting & Machining

  • Established workflows
  • Casting + machining: days per sample
  • MIM: tooling per design
  • No iterative design capability
  • Weeks per design iteration cycle

The J160R was designed for one purpose: to be the most accessible entry point to production-grade metal additive manufacturing. Universities use it to teach AM. Corporate R&D labs use it to qualify new materials. When you are ready to scale, every parameter transfers directly to the J400P or J800P.

Skip the MIM Tooling. Go Straight to Sintered Parts.

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) requires dedicated tooling for every part design — long lead times and high upfront investment per part family. The J160R eliminates the tool entirely.

15% Binder vs. MIM's 40–50%

Less binder means larger parts can print and sinter without cracking. Print green parts directly from CAD, debind and sinter using established MIM thermal profiles, and deliver fully dense metal components in days — not months.

100–100,000-Piece Sweet Spot

Ideal for batch sizes from 100 to 100,000 pieces where tooling amortization kills the business case. Every part on the tray prints in the same cycle time regardless of quantity.

Zero Tooling Iteration

Modify the CAD file and print again — no new mold, no weeks of waiting. Test multiple design variants in a single build. Design feedback in days, not months.

Drop-in to Existing Sintering Lines

The J160R replaces only the injection step. Your debinding furnace, sintering furnace and post-processing stations continue operating exactly as they do today.

How It Works: From CAD File to Finished Metal Part

Metal binder jetting in 7 steps — no tooling, no supports, from design file to sintered component.

1

CAD Design

Create or import your 3D model. Export as STL. Standard CAD formats — no proprietary file types.

2

Slice & Setup

AFSWin3DP-L software slices the model into 0.03–0.2 mm layers. Set binder saturation and print speed per material.

3

Binder Jetting Print

Powder spreader deposits a thin metal layer. Inkjet head selectively jets binder at 400–1200 dpi. 165 cc/h.

4

Cure Green Part

Printed "green" part is heated to harden the binder — ready for standard MIM debinding and sintering workflows.

5

Debind

Thermal or solvent debinding removes the binder, leaving a porous "brown" part ready for sintering.

6

Sinter

High-temperature furnace fuses metal particles. Part shrinks predictably, compensated in CAD. 95–99%+ density.

7

Finished Metal Part

Fully dense metal component ready for use. Optional: CNC finishing, polishing, heat treatment or coating.

Why the J160R Belongs in Your Lab

Designed specifically for universities, research institutes and corporate R&D labs — the J160R packs industrial binder jetting into a benchtop footprint without compromising on what matters.

Benchtop Footprint

1,200 × 1,000 × 1,440 mm at ≈650 kg fits a standard laboratory. No factory floor, no reinforced foundation — just 380V power and clean dry air.

R&D-Optimized Build Volume

160 × 65 × 65 mm — sufficient for test coupons, material qualification samples and small functional prototypes. Dozens of samples per run.

Inkjet Speed, Not Laser Speed

A single high-resolution printhead (400–1200 dpi) deposits binder across the entire powder bed in each pass. Throughput scales with build density, not part count.

Parameters Transfer to Production

Every material qualification, binder selection and sintering profile developed on the J160R transfers directly to the J400P and J800P. Your R&D investment is your production ramp-up plan.
